Performance: In these early works composers often did not include dynamic markings. The dynamic markings in this edition are only a suggestion. As a guide, in the Baroque period they employed terraced dynamics, meaning, changing dynamics at the beginning of new sections of music or when a section was repeated.

German

The German art song grew out of songs composed for amateurs in the eighteenth century and gradually matured to become a musically significant part of the concert repertory of the professional singer in the nineteenth century. The early composers of German lieder (songs) included Reichardt, Zelter, and Zumsteeg. They had a strong influence in perfecting this art form with better poetry, composing with more varied and extended harmony, and greater vocal range. The first masters of the form would include Schubert, Schumann, Loewe, and Brahms, followed later by Wolf, Mahler, and Richard Strauss.

Of the various foreign language song classifications, German Lieder provides the greatest wealth of selection for singers particularly for the beginning bass voice.
